The people of Perth experienced a spectacular celebration of Australia Day with tonight's City of Perth Australia Day Skyworks, says Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi.
She said many thousands of people who watched the 28TH Skyworks event along the Swan River foreshore or from other vantage points were treated to something special with the synchronised fireworks and soundtrack attuned to the theme ‘The Aussie Spirit’ and featuring home-grown favourite Rolf Harris.
“There were some quite dazzling new pyrotechnic effects –– and even a little lightning –– that lit up the sky and river in spectacular fashion and the jet-ski fireworks added a different dynamic to the show,” Ms Scaffidi said.
“It was great to see such an emphatic expression of pride in our national identity. Seeing so many people enjoying the occasion, on a warm WA summer’s night, highlights the significance of Skyworks to West Australians.”
The day started with a citizenship ceremony at Council House at which 20 people from many different countries received their Australian citizenship.
“Australia Day brings so many of us together and provides an opportunity to reflect on our good fortune in living in a free and prosperous nation,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Over time, City of Perth Skyworks has evolved into a uniquely West Australian event that is the nation’s biggest community celebration of Australia Day.”
The Lord Mayor said a huge effort went into ensuring the success of Skyworks each year so that the City could present an iconic event befitting Australia’s national day.
Ms Scaffidi paid tribute to the other supporters of the event, chiefly Lotterywest, MIX 94.5, which provided the soundtrack, and Channel 7. She also thanked the WA Police, FESA, St John Ambulance, Department of Transport, Main Roads, Town of Victoria Park, City of South Perth and the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (Kings Park) for their support and co-operation.

Three anti-whaling protesters who boarded a Japanese security ship at the weekend will be released without charge but have been rebuked by the Prime Minister, who labelled their "hazardous" action unacceptable.
